Hi! I'm Krys!

Candidate Krys Maher facing the camera and smiling. He is wearing round half-rim glasses with short brown hair, pale skin

I am a born and raised Cape Bretoner, who like many others, left Sydney as soon as I graduated high school. It felt like I couldn't leave fast enough and I didn't think I'd ever move back. That changed over years of visits and seeing the growth and renewal in CBRM. I want to support continued growth through governance, political advocacy, and community-building. If we want to address outmigration, perhaps leadership by people who've left and returned is needed.

I am a low-income queer person living with multiple disabilities. I rely on our public transit system and benefit from the Low Income Property Tax Credit. I am both a service-user and volunteer within local community organizations. I am more attuned to the needs of citizens with the lowest incomes and highest challenges than most candidates. I promise to work hard to rebuild the trust in competency our outgoing Council lost with the Provincial Government when they chose to gift much of the $15 million municipal top-up to Loblaws, Walmart, and the Federal and Provincial governments through a 5% property tax cut across the board instead of using these funds for our community members and proposing measured tax reform that puts Local before Loblaws.

I commit to thoughtful governance for District 12 and CBRM as a whole. We need and deserve leadership that is capable of understanding the advocacy research and policy alternatives available to guide our work. I'm not interested in acting as an overpaid 311 operator with occasional photo-ops. I am invested in enacting sustainable change through smart governance and true community collaboration.

As a citizen, I initiated and helped CBRM staff to secure $10,000 in funding for CBRM in 2023 by volunteering as a Youth Accessibility Leader with the Federal Enabling Accessibility Fund - Youth Innovation Component. I am currently working on applying for up to $24,000 each for accessibility-related improvements with CBRM and various small businesses and non-profits. There were significant hurdles involved with connecting to the right people internally and missed opportunities with accessibility improvements to Neville Park and the Whitney Pier Heritage Trail. I know I am capable of delivering so much more for our communities if I'm better positioned to advocate more effectively for us all. Elect Krys this October for thoughtful governance and a commitment to advocating for provincial and federal funds to support us in actioning our accessibility plan.
